Sunday Spotlight: Insta-Love

Hey everyone, Alyssa speaking! I suppose this topic is more or less a way for me to vent away my feelings on “insta-love” but it must be said… Why so many authors out there seem to love to incorporate it into their books is beyond me. In case you didn’t know what “insta-love” is, let me enlighten you: 

Girl meets boy. They have two conversations together… Sparks fly… And then BOOM! They’ve declared their undying love for one another and have officially started planning their wedding and picking out baby names. 

Queue my dramatic eye roll. 

Typically when this happens, I usually think to myself ”WTF just happened? They don’t even know each other!” You've all come across this at some point and know exactly what I’m talking about here, trust me. Oftentimes I read a book that I’m really starting to enjoy, but then I get a dose of the dreaded “insta-love” and am completely turned off and ready to start something new. In my opinion, it just makes everything feel so unrealistic. I mean, it just seems too far-fetched believing that the heroine/hero fall in love three seconds after making eye contact. 

My point is, clearly many people don’t care for this particular theme. Too many times I’ve seen readers often complain about it in their reviews, myself included. So why does it keep happening? You’d think that if readers constantly spoke out against it, authors would take note and stop incorporating it into their stories. In a perfect world, we’d all move past insta-love and jump straight into well-developed relationships instead. Unfortunately, I just don’t see that happening anytime soon. *sigh*

So, what do you think? Do you like Insta-Love or wish authors would spend more time developing relationships?

This is our second Christmas on the blog and we are very thankful for all of you that follow us and read our posts! 

Over the past year and a half, we've reached some milestones that we never thought we'd reach. We celebrated our first birthday with a huge blowout giveaway and we also hit 1,000 likes (and counting!) on FB and did another big giveaway. In both giveaways, we had some amazing authors donate prizes. We were really humbled by the love and support of those authors. 

It's true that we don't have many posts scheduled from now until the new year, but we're going to be around. 

We have a post planned (and in the production stages) for our top reads of 2014. So keep your eyes out for that. 

We're looking forward to 2015 and already have some posts scheduled for January, including the blog tour for Kristen Ashley's upcoming book Wild and Free. 

Nikki and Lindsay will be doing a joint review (because you know how much they love that!) and that will go live on January 2nd. 

We thank you for following us and we look forward to 2015 and all it will bring! 

Sunday Spotlight: JB MORGAN takes us on a trip down Holly Lane!

We have the honor of welcoming a long-time friend and newly published author, J.B. Morgan!!!!

Today we have a little interview-esque discussion with J.B. about her new book Holly Lane!

How did Holly Lane come about?

I was working on my first story when I was approached to be a part of a holiday anthology. I was really excited to be on board, and to get my first book out there, even if it was a short story. However, after seeing how many writers were on the list, I felt like I would get lost in the shuffle so I backed out. This was my first chance at putting my story out and I was worried it would get lost with the bigger names in the anthology. After I backed out of the book, an idea to write Holly Lane formed in my mind.

About Holly Lane, debut novel.

Originally, Holly Lane was supposed to be about three couples however, one particular couple over took me, and that’s the direction I went. Another tid-bit, Holly Lane was supposed to be a novella which eventually turned into a novel the more I continued to write as the story easily flowed from my mind.

Holly Lane is about a couple named Hollie and Layne. Hollie goes on her senior grad trip and meets Layne, a military man, in Hawaii on a little R&R with his best friend. They have a week together, and that week makes a difference in how their lives will take a turn. It will be up to them to see if they can make a long distance relationship happen and if they can weather any storms that may come their way.

This is a sweet, swoon worthy, love story with some humor, teary moments, and a bit of holiday magic thrown into the mix.

What inspired Holly Lane and your future novels?

All of the stories I’m working on were inspired by real events, at some point, in my life. As for Holly Lane, that was inspired by my own high school senior graduation trip to Hawaii. While I was there, with my two friends and some classmates, I met a man who was stationed in Hawaii, in the Army. We spent the whole week together hanging out with his friend, and my friends, and that’s how the story formed. I took the bare bones of that time frame and formed Hollie and Layne and gave myself, essentially, a second chance love story through this couple.

Upcoming projects and news to share?

I’m working on a story titled, Nate (A Texas Jacks Novel.) Nate is about a man whom Charlie, aka Charlotte, meets while at a country dance club. She’s shy but is content in life, though it may be a bit boring, and Nate is all out there yet he’s afraid of letting anyone in, after the tragic accident loss of his mother.

Nate will be out around March 2015.

As for any news, I will be at the Passion in Portland book signing on September 12, 2015.

I’m a married, stay-at-home mom of two. When I’m not writing, I can stay busy by volunteering at my daughter’s school, volunteering with my church, and trying to stay afloat on house hold chores and anything else thrown my way. Sound is an abstract concept for most people. We spend our lives blocking out the static in order to focus on what we believe is important. But what if, when the clarity fades into silence, it's the obscure background noise that you would give anything to hold on to?

I've always been a fighter. With parents who barely managed to stay out of jail and two little brothers who narrowly avoided foster care, I became skilled at dodging the punches life threw at me. Growing up, I didn’t have anything I could call my own, but from the moment I met Eliza Reynolds, she was always mine. I became utterly addicted to her and the escape from reality we provided each other. Throughout the years, she had boyfriends and I had girlfriends, but there wasn't a single night that I didn’t hear her voice.

You see, meeting the love of my life at age thirteen was never part of my plan. However, neither was gradually going deaf at the age of twenty-one.

They both happened anyway.

Now, I'm on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.

Fighting for my career.

Fighting the impending silence.

Fighting for her.

Every night, just before falling asleep, she sighs as a final conscious breath leaves her.

I think that's the sound I'll miss the most.

"That wasn't yours to take away," he exploded into the otherwise silent night. His words echoed off the surrounding buildings, each wave slicing me to the quick all over again. "That was our place. Not yours." His voice cracked right alongside my heart.

"Yeah, well, there was a lot of stuff that wasn't yours to take either." I held his gaze, desperately trying to be strong, but as his eyes grew wide, I whimpered.

His long legs strode forward, stopping only inches away from me. He was crowding me, but he still leaned in closer to my face. "There is nothing in this world that was ever more mine than you," he stated. Though it was the absolute truth, I wished with all my heart that it were a lie.

"Till," I cried, swiping the tears from my eyes.

"Why!" he shouted, causing his muscles to tense under the force. "Goddamn it! I needed that place."

Porch lights flashed on from the surrounding apartments, illuminating not only the dark but also my rage.

I shoved my hands into his chest. "What about what I needed? You left! I waited in that fucking apartment for weeks."

He didn't budge, but my bare feet slipped, sending me toward the ground. Impossibly fast, Till's hand snaked out and caught my arm. I didn't let his chivalrous gesture douse my fire. I had six months’ worth of words to say to the man I was irrevocably in love with.

"You took what you wanted. Then you left me."

"Doodle," he whispered.

I had been perilously close to the edge of insanity, and with one single word, he’d pushed me over.

I lost it completely.

Pounding my fists against his chest, I screamed at the top of my lungs, "It's Eliza! My name is fucking Eliza! Not Doodle!" I spun to march away, but Till's arms folded around me, lifting me off my feet to restrain me.

I was miniscule compared to him. There was no use in fighting, but I still kicked my legs, irrationally desperate to get away from him—but only because I knew I couldn't keep him for forever.

"Stop it!" he growled into my ear. "I know your Goddamn name—probably better than I know my own."

Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Aly Martinez is a stay-at-home mom to four crazy kids under the age of five, including a set of twins. Currently living in South Carolina, she passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a glass of wine at her side.

After some encouragement from her friends, Aly decided to add “Author” to her ever-growing list of job titles. Five books later, she shows no signs of slowing. So grab a glass of Chardonnay, or a bottle if you’re hanging out with Aly, and join her aboard the crazy train she calls life.
