VEILS by Brynne Asher

45554036. sy475

“Give me a memory, Noah.”

That’s what she said … the woman who rendered me stupid in the shadows at a wedding reception. I did everything I could to figure her out. She wore more veils of armor than I’ve seen in a lifetime. On the outside, she was strong and self-assured. But within those beautiful, guarded blues? She was laced with vulnerability and grief.

We had one night. The best night. She got the memory she wanted, but in the process, I was left branded.

Then she thought she could strut out my front door and my life, right after announcing she was my boss’s baby sister.

I had no choice but to follow. Not only did I go after her, I chased her halfway around the world. Because when it comes to her, one memory isn’t enough. It doesn’t matter that there couldn’t be a more opposite pair than us.

Gracie Cain is a healer. I’m Noah Jarvis, a cold-hearted killer.

But when my job came back to bite me in the ass, I wasn’t the only one caught in the crossfire. It bought us memories no one was counting on.

That’s when all the veils were ripped off

You slay me Brynn Asher. I just finished Veils and I have actual tears in my eyes. I've loved all the books in this series but I have to say, Jarvis is the best yet. You absolutely killed it! ❤

I have to say, when I first met Jarvis years ago in Vines, I had no idea the depth he was hiding. While he was only a secondary character in the first 3 books, he seemed to have a chip on his shoulder that I wasn't sure would ever go away. We didn't get much of him so it was hard to really get a good read on his personality. I can now say I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him and see how far he's come in his own story.

I liked Jarvis in the previous books. I even liked him in the beginning of Veils. But I fell in love with him at the airport when he brought Gracie breakfast burritos and replaced her coffee. I loved how he was intrigued by Gracie, how he knew she has secrets and he wanted her to tell them to him. He doesn't want to just learn all about her from her 'file', but have her open up to him of her own free will. He followed her across the world to get just a little more time with her. He pushes, but not in an obtrusive way.

"Go Chase your dreams, baby. Every single one of them. You deserve it."

If that doesn't scream perfect book boyfriend material, I don't know what does! ❤😍 The biggest thing I liked about Jarvis, he doesn't like people. I don't either. That makes him A-Ok in my book! He's so sweet in a secret, only for Gracie kind of way. I loved how he was falling in love with her and was totally ok with it. He's making plans. Plans for a future with her where he never did anything like that before. I also love the added humor amidst the drama. Harry strikes again with her cute cow self. 🐮

This book was so amazing! Jarvis and Gracie's story was just beautiful. Her history and the things she's endured.... For Gracie to be as strong as she is, it's just pure beauty. And how Jarvis was with her, how he fell for her and was determined to give her nothing but a beautiful life is what true love is. Yes, I know this is a fictional romance book, but so what. As a die-hard reader, THIS is what book boyfriends and book hangovers are made of.

I was hooked from the beginning. I tried to stay awake to read all in one sitting but that didn't happen. Luckily for me, I had a free morning with no plans but to get back to Veils and see it through to the beautiful end. And the ending was, indeed, beautiful. So sweet and perfect. Brynne Asher is such a great author. She really knows how to tell a story that hooks you in and just won't let go. The writing was awesome and the characters were great. I loved seeing the guys from the previous books and where they are now. I don't think too much time has passed in the story since the last book so it felt like I was picking up where Gifts left off. Either way, I really loved and enjoyed Veils!

The Killers series is one I go back to often and I'm glad I now have this gem to add to the pile.

Brynne Asher lives in the Midwest with her husband, three children and her perfect dog. When she isn’t creating pretend people and relationships in her head, she's running her kids around and doing laundry. She enjoys decorating and shopping, and is always seeking the best deal. A perfect day in “Brynne World" ends in front of an outdoor fire with family, friends, s’mores, and a delicious cocktail.

READ A SNEAK PEEK

Locke ducked close to her ear, purposefully rasping a five o’clock shadow against her neck, and again asked, “Do we know anything new?” She whimpered. He had to have heard the quiet groan, and he swayed them together and— damn, she felt him. Cassidy’s eyes went wide as he held her backside against his crotch. Was Locke turned-on? Locke was turned-on. And he wanted her to know. The realization was as potent as a narcotic. It hit her blood, and she was high. But he’d asked about work. What was she supposed to do? She tried to recover. Shaking and stupidly pretending this wasn’t a thing, she turned. Eye to eye, she couldn’t read him! He didn’t move. Didn’t touch her. Was the ball in her park? He’d asked about Alex, twice. But he had a hard-on! Cassidy was so confused and turned on that she couldn’t trust her instincts. She needed to do what she did best— work. Focus on the job. “He’s in there.” Cassidy, failing to regain her composure, was still breathless. Locke smiled. “Good to know.” She’d made the right choice in focusing on work. She was there for Alex. If Locke wanted to… pursue something, he could do it when she wasn’t busy. He had her number. “Cass…” His eyebrows challenged her to admit their tension escalating. There was Cass again. She hated nicknames— until they flowed from his mouth. They needed space, but she didn’t trust her legs. They were weak as her mind was wild. She tried to swallow, shifting away— “Don’t go.” He was holding her, hugging her. Locke cupped her cheek and let his fingers slide along her jaw. She was drowning in him as Locke’s hand moved down her neck, letting the thump of her pulse jump against his fingertips. “I—” “Excuse me,” a woman snapped as she bustled in, grabbing her shawl, and she sneered on the way out. “Oh, God.” Cassidy jumped, her cheeks hot and her embarrassment swallowing her alive. She choked on the knot in her throat and covered her face, backing away from him. “I’m so sorry.” “Cassidy.” Locke reached for her. “So, so sorry.” She tilted to face him, and they stood in the dark shadows. She was the reporter; he was the protector. His voice rumbled, not judgmental or embarrassed. “You have nothing to say sorry about. To anyone.” “We might disagree on that.” She’d staked the rebound of her career on Alex, but when Locke came around, she always seemed to forget. “I don’t try to upset you.” The pregnant pause hung heavy. “Not on purpose anyway— maybe for fun, playing around, but I won’t do that again.” “Okay…” He was playing down their moment of intimacy. Maybe for him it had been nothing but an erection and a tease, while for her it was the stuff of nightly fantasies. How foolish was she? Embarrassment made her stomach drop. But still. Again, they were almost stomach to stomach. Too close. Too intimate. Too… much. “I’m not upset.” But that wasn’t true. “You’re something,” he said. “Something,” she agreed. “True.” Something she’d never, ever admit to. Tugging her bottom lip between her teeth, she couldn’t map out his intentions— “Don’t do that.” “Do what?” Cassidy froze, wondering what she’d done wrong. His gaze lasered on her lips. “That.” Finally, she saw the same desperate hunger on his face. The authority in his command made her shiver. Unquenched lust boiled in his eyes, and Cassidy didn’t know how to handle this Locke— the uncontrolled and unscripted one. “Oh… um. I…” In a tailspin, she couldn’t decide whether to fight for what she could finally read on his face or pull her act together and act like they were working together. She did neither, standing there, still unsure. “You keep biting that lip, Cass.” Locke lifted an eyebrow and scorched her panties. “Don’t do that.” “Okay.” The devil on her shoulder whispered, Bite your lip again. Or bite his. Maybe they could kiss and work. Locke lifted his chin, his gaze falling past her. “Alex is leaving.” Wait— what? Damn it.

Breaking Danger by Lisa Marie Rice!

Only one man and one woman can stop the world from burning in Breaking Danger, the thrilling final volume in Lisa Marie Rice's sexy Ghost Ops series, in which an elite super-secret military team must face down doomsday and protect the gifted women they love

Haven, a community of misfits and geniuses, is one of the few safe places remaining in a world on fire. Run by the Ghost Ops team, three dangerous, fearless, soldiers who were once betrayed and disgraced, will fiercely protect their country and the women they adore from a deadly plague that has turned people into violent monsters.

Beautiful brilliant Dr. Sophie Daniels is trapped in her home with the only antidote to the plague. Former Ghost Ops elite operative Jon Ryan is sent on a suicide rescue mission, brutally fighting his way to her side. Together they must cross treacherous terrain before they can return to Haven, but for them to succeed Sophie must trust this tormented soul and place her life, and her heart, in his hands.

Years of combat training has prepared Jon for this moment-unafraid, nothing is too dangerous now that he's found Sophie. He will risk everything, fight anyone, for her and a future filled with hope and love.

I have to start out by saying that I regret not reading this series in order. It's not to say that you can't read this on it's own, but while the story surrounds Jon and Sophie is their own, some of the secondary stories and cameos by the other couples didn't have a great impact on me because I haven't read their books. But with that said, this was extremely enjoyable!

Going along with my previous statement of having not read the previous books, I was just a little confused at the start of the book. It was obvious that the situation that Jon and Sophie found themselves in was something that had started prior to the book starting. And while there was a little bit of a catch up for me, I caught on quickly and powered through!

I'm a huge sucker for military guys. And Jon was no exception. Add to the fact that he's a blond Nordic god and I was quite literally in heaven. And Jon was definitely a alpha military hero. He thought quick on his feet and got himself and Sophia out of a few jams.

Speaking of Jon, he definitely had a crappy past. And there were a few heart breaking moments where he remembered the betrayal of his parents and then again when he told Sophia about his past.

I liked Sophia. In some books when you have a really smart character, they can come off sounding like a text  book and that gets annoying. But Sophia wasn't like that. She was down to earth and likable

Sophia and Jon definitely had chemistry! From the first moment they connected, it was off the charts hot! I loved every moment of them together.

This was definitely an enjoyable read and I want to go back and read the other books in the series.

Lisa Marie Rice is eternally 30 years old and will never age. She is tall and willowy and beautiful. Men drop at her feet like ripe pears. She has won every major book prize in the world. My first Jessie Lane book was Big Bad Bite and I absolutely loved it. I fell in love with this author's style and knew immediately she (they) were one (two) to look out for. I knew that I would have to read more and soon. When I saw that Secret Maneuvers was released I pounced on it. I had actually planned to read a different book with a friend but this one was literally screaming at me. It doesn't happen often that I come across a book that I just have to read immediately. SM was one that did. So I got it and started it and stayed up until 6 am reading. Alas my poor eyeballs just couldn't keep up so I had to put it down and finish later that day. (you know, at a more reasonable hour! ;)) What an emotionally (gripping) charged, action packed, sexy, heart-wrenching, gut clenching, edge of your seat, can't put it down book! I seriously loved this book! There is not one bad thing to say about it. Other than I want more, of course! :-) The writing was once again superb! The story was one that reached out and grabbed a hold of me and would not let go. I absolutely loved it. The characters were so well written and developed I felt connected to them! Belle and Bobby had a love that is so sweet and heartwarming it just makes you want to find that for yourself.
You're my everything, my fucking essence. I cease to exist unless I'm with you. ~ Bobby

Belle endured such a craptastic childhood but was able to find her prince. But then that prince made one monumental mistake that changed their course drastically. There were secrets and lies and heartbreak. There was suspense and drama and steam. Oh my, the steam! But watching their reunion unfold was amazing. Would they make it work after all? Or would all those secrets and resentments hold them back from each other? There is so much I want to say about this book, but I fear I would start to run off at the mouth er.. keyboard and spoil it for other readers, so I'll leave it short and sweet. I loved everything about this book. The plot was sound, and while Belle's 'big secret' was one I had a strong feeling about from almost the beginning, it wasn't one of those things where you get irritated because it's so obvious. I enjoyed the dialogue immensely! I have to mention that because I've read several books lately that had robot sounding dialogue and that drives me crazy! The way the characters interacted in SM was so realistic it was like a movie in my head. I was very happy about that! The supporting characters were so great that I was instantly interested in stories for them all! I really can't wait for the next in this series and hopefully after that Declan will have his book! I need Decaln's book! LMAO!! Declan and the shop vac!!!
"I didn't care what direction we were facing; horizontal, vertical, hanging halfway off the bed, or tied up in pretzel knots, as long as I got to bury my cock in her within the next breath I took.... I started a rhythm so fast that she was forced to curl her hands over the side of the mattress and try to hold on, or find herself literally fucked over the side of the bed inch by inch."

Here's a gif I found that was too perfect for the smexy scene above not to share. But be warned, it is most definitely NSFW  ;)
