Review: Hooked by Emily McIntire

Hooked by Emily McIntire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book Description:

He wants revenge, but he wants her more.

Once Upon A Time, there was a little boy.
His belly full of laughter, his life full of joy.
Until one day, something changed; stripped his innocence away.
The hole inside making space for the devil to come and play.
His dreams gone forever, he grew up way too fast.
An endless night of crocodiles, and watches made of glass.
He grew into a villain, the taste of vengeance on his tongue.
Craving to make his enemies pay for the misdeeds they had done.
Instead he found a darling girl, and refused to let her go.
For what better way to make the man pay, than to steal his little shadow.

*Hooked is a full-length, complete standalone and the first in The Never After Series: A collection of fractured fairy tales where the villains get the happy ever after. When Nikki first showed me this book, it looked good but I wasn't in the mood for it. So it just became one in a long line of books to go on the never-ending TBR list.

But then Nikki started it and was showing me screenshots of pages, and I was beyond intrigued. I'd just finished the book I was reading, and I wasn't sure what to read next. And since it's been a hot minute since Nikki and I have done a buddy read, I figured, it doesn't hurt to try the sample. So I did. And I was hooked.

So after 1-clicking the book, I dove in. I was so proud of myself. I knew Nikki had dinner plans, so I sat down, ignored trick-or-treaters and I read. My dogs snoozed and chewed on bones (I took the occasional photo when they were beyond cute) and I caught up to her and surpassed her...or so I thought. I was hoodwinked I tell ya! Next thing I knew, she was asking if I started the book and me, being the proud reader I am, I was like Yup! And I got pretty far! Little did I know, I was about to be betrayed...

Ok, so I wasn't betrayed (I'm just getting dramatic because the book called for it)...but I honestly thought I'd read past her a little and it would be all good and next thing I knew, she was like "I'm really far into it." Uhhhh, ma'am....HOW?!

While I'm still not sure how she pulled that off, I kept reading. I sustained an injury while doing so (I dropped my phone on my face because I dozed off)...but I basically read the book in (almost) 1 sitting (that pesky sleep thing happened).

I loved Hooked. I loved seeing a totally different version of the Peter Pan characters (oops, was that a spoiler? Oh well).

There were definitely twists and turns in the book, keeping me on my toes. I did figure out some of the twists ahead of time, so I wasn't surprised. But the author did an amazing job with the story. I can't wait to read the next book and see what she comes up with next!

So, as I reread this review (editing and whatnot) I realize it was more of a review of my buddy reading than the book itself, but it is what it is. The book was awesome and totally worth the read! Some of the aspects of it aren't my typical cup of tea, but that didn't bother me. I definitely recommend checking out this book so you can see Hook get his HEA.
